Google Chrome is a popular online browser, but it has one major flaw: it consumes a lot of RAM. Although it’s difficult to entirely resolve the issue, there are some things you can do to lessen Chrome’s memory usage.
Why is Chrome consuming so much memory?
You might be surprised to learn that Google Chrome has become less RAM demanding over time. Even so, it’s something that others notice, and it might be an issue. What exactly is it about Chrome that causes it to consume so much memory?
Every tab and extension in Chrome and other web browsers is stored in a distinct RAM process. With current multi-core CPUs, isolating the processes in this way provides superior stability, security, and performance. These are minor processes, but they pile up quickly.
In a nutshell, Chrome separates everything into its own process, and you’re probably doing a lot of things at once. A large number of processes means a large amount of RAM is consumed. So, what can we do to make things better?
Turn off all background apps.
After you close the browser, Chrome apps might continue to run in the background. They’ll gobble away your memory when you’re not even aware they’re open. You can manually close them using Task Manager, but an even better option is to prevent them from occuring in the first place.
To do so, open Chrome Settings and select Advanced > System from the drop-down menu. “Continue running background programs while Google Chrome is closed” should be turned off. When all Chrome browser windows are closed, this ensures Chrome doesn’t use any RAM.
It’s important to keep in mind that not all Chrome apps run in the background. Some of them do, but this isn’t the case with all Chrome apps.
Don’t Keep So Many Tabs Open At The Same Time.
This may seem self-evident, but cleaning up your browsing habits is one of the simplest ways to reduce RAM utilization. Chrome will consume a lot of RAM if you have more than a dozen tabs open all the time.
Chrome makes an effort to organize tabs so that they don’t consume as much RAM. Tabs that haven’t been used in a long time will be put to sleep. Even so, the less tabs and windows you have open, the less RAM you’ll consume.
Tab Groups should be used if you absolutely must have a large number of tabs open. You can then put them in a group, collapse the group, and put them to sleep.
Remove any extensions that are no longer in use.
Because extensions are such an important part of the Chrome experience, you’re likely to have at least a few installed. Extensions, like tabs, have their own set of processes. Getting rid of any addons that aren’t in use will help you free up some RAM.
Find “Extensions” under “More Tools” by clicking the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner.
You may also use the address bar to type chrome:/extensions/. Simply click “Remove” for any extensions you aren’t using anymore from this page.
Monitor The Task Manager in Chrome
Chrome, like Windows, has its own built-in Task Manager. You may use this to see exactly what’s operating in Chrome in great detail. You probably don’t need to destroy Chrome processes in general. You can kill any processes that are consuming RAM in this section.
The Task Manager may be accessed under “More Tools” in the three-dot menu icon in the right corner. It can also be accessed by using Shift+Esc on the keyboard.
Simply select the task you don’t want to run and press the “End Process” button. You shouldn’t have to kill these processes in general. Closing tabs is a lot easier. If a tab or extension is hogging memory, a restart may be all that is required to restore normalcy.
Try a Fresh Install or Reset to Default
Finally, if you truly believe Chrome is consuming more RAM than it should, you can start over. You can do this in one of two ways: reset the settings or install from scratch.
Setting things back to how they were when you initially installed Chrome is as simple as resetting the settings. The start page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs will all be reset. It will also turn off extensions (until you enable them) and delete temporary data. You will not lose your bookmarks, history, or password.
Go to Advanced > Reset & Clean Up in Chrome’s settings. Click “Reset Settings” after selecting “Restore settings to their original defaults.”
You’ll need to remove and reinstall Chrome for the second option. This will also reset everything, but it will also delete all of your previously saved data. You’ll be able to recover it if you utilize Chrome Sync. Otherwise, it’ll be lost forever.
Chrome is a memory-intensive browser. There’s just so much you can do to make things better, but it’s manageable. Unless your device is low-powered or has issues, Chrome’s memory usage isn’t a major issue. Hopefully, some of these pointers will be useful.
What Is Random Access Memory (RAM)?
RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and you’ve probably seen it in a laptop or desktop computer. Modern RAM sticks for desktop PCs are seen in the image above. They have a stylish enclosure that also serves as a heat dissipator. Unless you’re a high-powered overclocker, however, this is primarily about appearances (and making them easier to install.)
Laptops, on the other hand, frequently use more basic RAM sticks due to space constraints. People rarely view the inside of a laptop, unlike current PC covers with clear sides. Laptop RAM with heat spreaders, on the other hand, is available (particularly for gaming versions).
What Does RAM Do?

Now that we know that the sticks in your PC’s motherboard are system RAM and that they serve as short-term memory, what does all of this mean in practice? Well, operations on your computer, such as opening a text document, necessitate access to the data stored in that file. The latest copy of that file is saved on the hard disk in long-term storage while you’re not working on it or when you click save.
The most recent data is saved in RAM for faster access when you’re working on the file. Spreadsheets, written documents, web pages, and streaming video are all examples of this.
It’s not simply data from documents, either. RAM can also be used to store program and operating system files, allowing apps and your computer to run smoothly. However, RAM isn’t the only source of short-term memory. A graphics card, for example, has its own graphics RAM, whereas the processor has smaller data caches.
Nonetheless, RAM is the primary storage area for data that is currently in use by the system.
